Ocean acidification may slow the pace of tropicalization of temperate fish communities

چکیده
Poleward range extensions by warm-adapted sea urchins are switching temperate marine ecosystems from kelp-dominated to barren-dominated systems that favour the establishment of range-extending tropical fishes. Yet, such tropicalization may be buffered ocean acidification, which reduces urchin grazing performance and barrens fishes prefer. Using experiencing natural warming we show acidification could buffer warming-facilitated reducing populations (by 87%) inhibiting formation barrens. This buffering effect CO2 enrichment was observed at vents associated with a shift turf-dominated state, found is less favourable Together, these observations suggest against barren via multiple processes (fewer barrens) consequently slow increasing rate fish communities. Warming shifting zones become more tropical. Natural vent sites buffers effects, numbers grazing, thus creating habitat hospitable than

Long-term empirical evidence of ocean warming leading to tropicalization of fish communities, increased herbivory, and loss of kelp.
Some of the most profound effects of climate change on ecological communities are due to alterations in species interactions rather than direct physiological effects of changing environmental conditions. Empirical evidence of historical changes in species interactions within climate-impacted communities is, however, rare and difficult to obtain. Here, we demonstrate the recent disappearance of ...
متن کاملOcean acidification alters fish-jellyfish symbiosis.
Symbiotic relationships are common in nature, and are important for individual fitness and sustaining species populations. Global change is rapidly altering environmental conditions, but, with the exception of coral-microalgae interactions, we know little of how this will affect symbiotic relationships. We here test how the effects of ocean acidification, from rising anthropogenic CO2 emissions...
متن کاملAccelerating Tropicalization and the Transformation of Temperate Seagrass Meadows
Climate-driven changes are altering production and functioning of biotic assemblages in terrestrial and aquatic environments. In temperate coastal waters, rising sea temperatures, warm water anomalies and poleward shifts in the distribution of tropical herbivores have had a detrimental effect on algal forests. We develop generalized scenarios of this form of tropicalization and its potential ef...

This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Biogeosciences (BG). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in BG if available. Abstract Ocean acidification (OA) poses a severe threat to tropical coral reefs, yet much of what is know about these effects comes from individual corals and algae incubated in isolation under high pCO 2. Studies of similar effects on coral reef ...
